چکیده

Training in motor skills such as athletics, dance, or gymnastics is not possible today except in the direct presence of the coach/instructor. This paper describes a computer vision based gesture recognition system which is used to metamorphose the user into a Virtual person, e.g. as a Kathakali dancer, which is graphically recreated at a near or distant location. Thus this can be seen by an o -site coach using low-bandwidth joint-motion data which permits real-time animation. The metamorphosis involves altering the appearance and identity of the user and also creating a speci c environment possibly in interaction with other virtual creatures. Unlike previous approaches to gesture based virtual reality, here i) a single monochrome camera is used to track the arms, and ii) colour di erences are used to disambiguate situations where the arm is occluding the user’s body. A robust vision module is used to identify the user, based on very simple binary image processing in real time which also manages to resolve self occlusion, correct for clothing/colour and other variations among users. Gestures are identi ed by locating key points at the shoulder, elbow and wrist joint, which are then recreated in an articulated humanoid model, which in this instance, represents a Kathakali dancer in elaborate traditional dress. Unlike glove based or other gesture and movement tracking systems, this application requires the user to wear no hardware devices and is aimed at making gesture tracking simpler, cheaper, and more user friendly.

Towards Natural Gesture Synthesis: Evaluating Gesture Units in a Data-Driven Approach to Gesture Synthesis

Virtual humans still lack naturalness in their nonverbal behaviour. We present a data-driven solution that moves towards a more natural synthesis of hand and arm gestures by recreating gestural behaviour in the style of a human performer. Our algorithm exploits the concept of gesture units to make the produced gestures a continuous flow of movement. We empirically validated the use of gesture u...

Human Computer Interaction Using Vision-Based Hand Gesture Recognition

With the rapid emergence of 3D applications and virtual environments in computer systems; the need for a new type of interaction device arises. This is because the traditional devices such as mouse, keyboard, and joystick become inefficient and cumbersome within these virtual environments. In other words, evolution of user interfaces shapes the change in the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). In...

Sound Selection by Gestures

This paper presents a prototypical tool for sound selection driven by users’ gestures. Sound selection by gestures is a particular case of ”query by content” in multimedia databases. Gesture-to-Sound matching is based on computing the similarity between both gesture and sound parameters’ temporal evolution. The tool presents three algorithms for matching gesture query to sound target. The syste...

Touching the Future: The Effects of Gesture-Based Interaction on Virtual Product Experience

With the popularity of touchscreen tablets and gesture control devices, the role of touch in online consumer behavior has become increasingly important. This study aims to investigate how sense of touch evoked by various interaction modes (i.e., mouse-driven interaction, touchscreen gesture interaction and mid-air gesture interaction) influences virtual product experience. Drawing on Feelings-a...
